"Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first" Ronald Reagan. This quote by President Reagan seems most appropriate right now as we attempt to unseal the truth about Ambulancegate currently underway in the Shoals.

Just Let Me Close My Door and Teach With the recent controversy between charter schools and traditional public schools, I was asked to write this article from a teacher’s perspective, and I realized that any caring, highly qualified teacher only wants one thing whether it is in a charter school or traditional public school: Just let me close my door and teach. Let’s face it – teachers and students alike really want the same things, education that works for all students. Read More ... Victoria L. Voss, M.Ed.
It seems some Shelby County residents aren't happy with their new University of Alabama vanity license plates. The non-personalized version of these plates features a sequence of three letters followed by a sequence of three numerals. So what's the problem? The three letter sequence of "CAM" was delivered to Shelby County, and many of the tags affluent purchasers are unhappy to be reminded of a certain Auburn footballer. Look at it this way...it gives new meaning to Tiders for Toomers.
Yesterday we had a number of calls regarding the drinking water in Cherokee. I spoke directly to Mignon Willis, vice-chairperson with the water board, and here is her comment.

J.O. Franks has resigned as city councilman. The frustrated man stated:
It’s nothing personal against anybody on (the council), but my health isn’t great and I just don’t feel like I need to be putting up with that mess,” Franks said today. “I’m tired of not getting anything done in the town. It’s impossible to get any work done and I just can’t stay in this situation.”
I guess with the nonesense that goes on in the town nothing should surprise us. Last year the Mayor stated on TV and in the papers that "It was a life or death situation because the city cut off their free fuel". Look at the numbers posted today. Does that look like they are penniless?
Where is the missing fuel? Why the ties to Keller? Why Oh Why is there no investigation, Mr. Mayor?
Citizens of Cherokee, these are the numbers filed for the year 2010. As you can see non-profits can be very profitable especially when they did not pay for fuel that year.
CURTAIN RODS --- PRICELESS On the first day, she sadly packed her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things. On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining-room table, by candle-light; she put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of spring-water. Helen Keller Ambulance service and Lauderdale EMA with the Cherokee Rescue squad thrown in for good measure. Why Cherokee Rescue Squad? We will explain in the next article and once you find out, that is going to probably have you scratching your head as to why the E-911 Board would even consider that?
How do you spell relief? The new Shoals Ambulance Service with its state-of-the-art fleet costing some $850,000.00 complete with a staff of 7 Paramedics and 7 EMTs. Instead of responding to E-911 Calls, they sit idle, parked at Shoals Hospital on Avalon Avenue along with the 7 Paramedics and 7 EMTs who are left their previous jobs to go to work with Shoals Ambulance.
The Colbert County E-911 Board Members seem to have changed their name by their actions of late to the Helen Keller Ambulance Board.Instead of representing the Citizens of Colbert County and the cities within its boundaries the E-911 Board Members have taken off the mask of "we represent all of our citizens," to what appears to be 100% of the board members' view point that we will protect the Golden Goose for Helen Keller Hospital regardless of how it may endanger the lives of the citizens here in Colbert County.
Presently, with the approval of the E-911 Board Members, the system is configured to operate like this.
We all are eventully going to end up in the cemetery but do we really need someone else's misstep to get us there faster?
If you were watching a rerun of "The Dukes of Hazard " and “Boss Hogg” was at his best you would be grinning at the Southern stereotyping of the good old boy Southern, small town way of life and how some things are done behind closed doors.
But unfortunately this is not a TV script nor is it fiction as it appears some of the antics of "Boss Hogg" just may have be put into play in the ole game of "Mine Is Bigger Than Yours Play Book." This fight started when it appeared the Colbert County E-911 Board Leadership tried to do a defacto CoupDegras on a pending request from the City Of Muscle Shoals to have a newly formed Shoals Hospital Ambulance Company replace Helen Keller Ambulance as the Primary Responder on all E-911 calls within their city, before the request was even sent.
How did the E-911 Board even find out about the letter you ask? Well! according to Mayor David Bradford he told EMA Director Mike Melton about the letter and asked Director Melton what they needed to do to make their wishes happen?
Facts indictate right after their conversation this information was passed on to someone on the E-911 Board. Almost immediately things turned into a down hill beaver slide with someone attempting to make the slide slicker than owl ...... in an attempt to make the Muscle Shoals Letter DOA (Dead On Arrival.) What they did not expect was an autopsy was going to be performed on their actions.
Some people fish, hunt, golf and do other things for entertainment. Then some use their imagination along with biblical and scientific facts to create a story that will keep you spell bound from the first page to very last. The Sacred Gene takes you on journal into the genetic world that so few truly understand even today. Since the beginning of time, every living thing had and still has a Genetic Code. Jesus Christ 's Genetic Code would match his brothers and sisters and their siblings today would have the same matching genetic makeup as Jesus in his day.
Before creating the story he spent time in the world of genetic research with scientists who deal with it daily. Some refer to this world of genetics as The God Code.

Several months ago Dr. Joe Cobb of the Colbert Animal Clinic had to treat a major neck laceration on a abuse case for the Colbert County Animal Shelter. The Dog who now has been named Crockett had a major injury which needed immediate attention. Several months before that a couple brought in a beagle that had been hit by a car and left for dead on highway 20 in Florence. The beagle's injuries were major and in 99% of most cases MaizIe as she is now known would have been put to sleep. Dr. Cobb had other ideas thou, and you will see in pictures the results of his work that shows the Veternarian skills of Dr. Joe Cobb of the Colbert Animal Clinic on Highway 72 West, Tuscumbia, Alabama, regarding the care and healing of crockett and maize. We don't believe after you see the pictures you will not have any doubt about his skills and abilities as one of the top vet's in the shoals area .

History tells us that Jesus had brothers and sisters. If you believe the story that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born, then the only blood line or DNA would be from Mary, his mother. This same DNA would course through the veins of his brothers and sisters also and has been carried forward with their descendants.
A local author explores the hunt for these siblings' descendants and as evidence begins to unfold, just how it starts to affect certain individuals. While the book is written as fiction, the medical facts laid out are real and reality starts to slam you directly in the face.
More to come when I tell you who this author is and how this entire story came about.

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease in that it is like watching molassis pour from a glass on a cold winter morning. It is a slow grasping monster that steals the personality a little each day. The trick is it does it so slow you really don't know it is in full run if you are not around that person every day. Then for a laugh, it allows the original personality to come back fleetingly. Sometimes it stays for just a few minutes and sometimes if kinder it will stay for a couple of hours then be engulped again into the cloud where they eventually will not return.
My mom loves and loved all of her grand children but one of her favorites was chad. Regardless of her condition she always asked about the grandchildren even thou they may have justed visited her, for 15 minutes after they left she would not remember them.
Then on a Saturday chad was killed in a car accident. The decision was made not to tell mom unitl things settled down a bit.
My sister and I two days after the funeral went to see mom . We had been there about 30 minutes talking about different things when mom just stopped as if she was listening to someone. She then said, " Chad said to tell you he is OK and there is no need for anyone to be worried or cry about him. He is in a beautiful place and he will see us again". She then continued on with the subject we were discussing before she interupted the conversation with the statement about chad. It was if she never heard it herself.
Until the day she died she never ask about chad again.
In the summer of 2010, Trader was writing Trader Evaluates for the Shoalanda Group and Firenze was penning Nurse Nan. While meeting during an animal rescue, the pair of writers began discussing the need for an online news magazine that concentrated on the Shoals. After several months of planning and some false starts, The Connection was born on October 6, 2010. We plan on being here for a long time and welcome your input. Enjoy!
